Air Travel Tips for Seniors
Air travel generally requires a little bit more planning for seniors. While your assisted living community may help with the transportation to and from the airport, you still want to be prepared. Keep reading to learn some tips on how to make your next flight as comfortable and stress-free as possible:
- Seek Assistance from the Airline: Each airline has different accommodations for assisting the elderly or disabled. You should always check with your chosen airline to see if they have any special accommodations, such as a shuttle service or personal attendants. Wheelchairs are also available at the airports to help you get around. Call ahead to the airline to reserve one.
- Consult with Your Doctor: Always consult with your doctor before any flight. Air travel can be physically and emotionally stressful. Your doctor may complete a health checkup to make sure you are physically able to travel.
- Wear the Proper Clothing: Wearing the proper clothing will help you stay comfortable throughout your journey. If you have poor circulation, ask your doctor if you are able to fly, and if so, ask if compression socks can help. During the flight, make sure you stretch and move your limbs to promote circulation.
- Drink Water: Dehydration is also an issue when traveling, especially if you are diabetic. Make sure that you stay hydrated throughout your trip by drinking plenty of fluids. Note that caffeine and alcohol are dehydrating and will not help.
- Pack Smart: Delays, cancellations, lost baggage, long waits, and uncertainty can cause stress. Make sure that your medication is packed on your carry-on luggage. Also include a toothbrush, reading materials, a change of socks and underwear, and any other necessary items. However, make sure that you adhere to TSA laws about what is allowed on your carry-on.
